How to Create a Wedding Website

Creating a wedding website is one of the best ways to communicate event information with your guests — you can only fit so many details on your invitations!

Here’s how to build an informative wedding website so guests know what to expect on your big day.

As Minnesota wedding planners, we know a thing or two about the information you need to share with guests.

Use this guide to build the best wedding website.

  • We recommend creating your wedding website around 6-8 months in advance, at least just to save the URL; you don’t need to have all the information posted just yet.

Typically, you will not put your wedding website on your save the dates. You WILL include the URL on your invitations.

  • In alphabetical order, we love the following platforms, which make customizing and adding details to your website easy.

    - The Knot

    - Minted

    - Riley Grey

    - With Joy

    - Zola.

If you’re ordering your invitations from an online retailer, you may want to use the same company to host your website as they have some matching templates.

  • To make it easier for guests to type (and remember) your wedding website, we think simple is best — just use your names! If that URL is already taken, include the year, date, or “wedding.”

If you have a cute “ship” name, that can be fun to use, too! But avoid obscure references or inside jokes that most guests won’t understand.

  • Homepage: Think of this as your virtual invitation; keep it pretty simple. Include your names, date, location, and the ceremony and reception times. It’s also nice to personalize the first page guests see with a cute photo of the two of you, or your wedding monogram.

RSVP: Use this page to direct to your online RSVP form (or provide clear instructions for mail-in responses). Don’t forget to list the RSVP deadline.

Travel: Share parking, transportation, and accommodation details for out-of-town guests. Include any specific rules your venue might have about when guests’ cars need to be out of the parking lot the next day.

Your Story: Personalize your site with a page for your love story — share how you met and how the proposal happened!

Q+A: Address common questions like dress code, plus-one policies, kids’ attendance, or anything else guests have been bothering you about!

  • Most of your friends and family probably know the basics of how you met, but everyone wants more details! Tell your guests about the first time you met (did sparks fly or you started as friends first?), and when you decided to make it official. It can be fun to include a different POV from your friends who may have witnessed your relationship grow. You could also include a “dating timeline” with photos over the course of your relationship.

Then, share a bit about the present! What do the two of you like to do for fun? Do you have pets? Where are you living now/did you buy a house together? What are you looking forward to as you begin your marriage?

  • Guests always have questions about what to wear, if their kids can attend, and if plus 1s are invited, so be sure to clearly outline your expectations for those things.

It can also be helpful to answer the following:

    - When does the reception end?

    - Is there a guest shuttle to/from the hotels?

    - How should guests inform you of a food allergy (hint: include this on the RSVP!)

    - Is the ceremony outside?

    - When is the RSVP deadline? (Yes, list it here AND on the RSVP page!)

  • You can add additional tabs/pages for whatever information you want to share with your guests!

You might want to include an “Order of Events” page for your guests with a more detailed timeline/itinerary for your day.

Couples will also commonly include pages for their engagement photos, wedding registry, a who’s-who of your wedding party, or even a “things to do” tab with local activities you recommend.

If you’re hosting other events such as a welcome party or post-wedding brunch for your guests, we recommend a “Wedding Weekend Events” tab for all of these details.
